The Origin of the Taiji Diagram
After Pangu separated heaven and earth, chaos first divided: clear qi rose to form the sky, while turbid qi sank to become the earth. In those days, there was no alternation of sun and moon between heaven and earth, only a hazy primal energy flowing in the primordial chaos, much like an infant who had not yet opened its eyes.
Fuxi stood by the banks of the Yellow River for eighty-one days. He watched the spirit tortoise emerge from the Luo River, its shell patterns shifting like star orbits; he observed the dragon horse leap from the river, its spiral fur transforming into black and white interlocking circles. At night, he saw the Big Dipper revolve around the Purple Forbidden Palace; by day, he contemplated the cycle of vegetation withering and flourishing as the seasons changed.
One night, a violent wind arose, and a mysterious light suddenly illuminated heaven and earth. Fuxi beheld two masses of qi wrestling in the clouds—one as black as ink, absorbing all shadows; the other as white as snow, emanating endless radiance. They entangled and pushed each other, yet 始终 maintained a delicate balance, like a pair of inseparable brothers. At the moment when dawn pierced the darkness, the two masses of qi suddenly merged into a circular halo, black containing white and white hiding black, just like a yin fish holding yang and a yang fish embracing yin.
This scene remained fixed before Fuxi's eyes for seven days and seven nights. He broke off yarrow stalks and drew the first arc on a turtle shell, then dotted the fish eyes with cinnabar. Later, when Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs, he understood the yin and yang properties of medicines through this diagram; when Huangdi developed military strategies, he comprehended the interaction of 出奇 and normal forces according to this principle. The diagram was carved on tripods, cast in swords, spread to the Western Regions with the camel bells of the Silk Road, and sailed into the South Seas with Zheng He's treasure ships, yet it always retained its original form—like the heart of the Chinese land beating for five thousand years, hiding the most authentic breath of heaven and earth in the flow of black and white.
